Born in a music loving family in 1960 at Lucknow, Sunil Kant Gupta was motivated to take up some form of musical expression by his father Shri Ram Chandra Gupta.

Sunil had his initial training under the watchful tutelage of Pandit Subhash Roy, a senior disciple of Pandit Bhola Nathji of Banaras. In a span of 8 years of intensive training, young Sunil began to emerge as a promising flautist. Simultaneously, Sunil received guidance regarding the concept of Ragas from Thakur Shamsher Singh, a noted Sarod Vadak. Along with his musical studies, Sunil graduated from Lucknow University. He also obtained “Sangeet Nipun” form Bhatkhande Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Lucknow, under the able guidance of Prof. Gopal Chandra Nandi, Late Prof. Prem Singh Kinot and Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra. Here it would be pertinent to make a mention of a few of the awards won by Sunil; viz: First Prize winner at the U.P.Sangeet Natak Academy in 1981; First Prize at Akashvani (A.I.R.) competition in 1982; the “Surmani” title awarded by Sur Singar Samsad Mumbai in 1989.

Young and bubbling with enthusiasm, Sunil set foot in Bombay to pursue a career in music in 1985. Here Sunil received valuable guidance from flute maestro Pandit Raghunath Seth for several years, a disciple of legendary & incomparable Pandit Pannalal Ghosh.

Today, Sunil has an “A” Grade on Akashvani & Doordarshan. He has participated in various music conferences all over India. Also participated in “Festival of India” at Russia in 1996. In India he has played some prestigious concerts i.e. Bhatkhande Jayanti, Lucknow, Sharad Utsav, Jaipur, ITC Sangeet Sammelan, Calcutta, Swami Haridas Sangeet Samaroh, Mumbai, Sur Sagar, Bangalore, Horizon for ICCR Lucknow & Pandit Kumar Gandharva Amrit Mahotsav, Devas. Crown of all these programmes Sunil had an opportunity to represent India for the Indo-British Programme (Common Wealth in India 50 Years celebration.) a jugalbandi with British flautist Mr. Brain Finnegan at NCPA Mumbai in 1999. And All India Radio featured Sunil in the National Programme of music in 1999. At present, since 1991 he is undergoing advanced training under Sangeet Acharya Dr. S.C.R.Bhat in Mumbai.

Regarding his performance, it has to be noted that he gives due weightage to both to the “Gayaki & Gat-kari” in his rendering. With his innovative talent, Sunil has made an extra large flute, which has enabled him to elaborate a Raga in the lower octave (Mandra Saptak) with great ease, as obtained in vocal music.

Not satisfied with so many achievement to his credit, young Sunil has set his sights on one highly cherished goal, that of becoming the top most flautist of the land.
