CARNATIC

Kanchan (nee Kuntal) was born in Mumbai & was passionate about dance since childhood. She started her Indian classical dance training in Bharatnatyam at the tender age of 10. Later, she moved to London where she started her training in Kathak with Smt. Priya Pawar. After seeing Madhavi Mudgals’ performance in France, she decided to go back to India to go deeper into the intricacies of Kathak & Indian Culture & joined the Gandharva Mahavidyalay, New Delhi in 1995 under the guidance of Guru Prerana Shrimali.

Having done her schooling in London, she has completed upto Alankaar Purna (8th Year, MA) in the performing art of Kathak, thus combining an understanding of the theory of dance while practically interpreting it. She is also training in Hindustani (Indian) Vocal & has completed Visharad I (BA) - 5th year) with Distinction. She is also very versatile with languages and is quadrilingue fluent in English, French, Hindi & Marathi.

Kanchan is an empanelled artist with ICCR since 2004 & has been awarded the Junior Fellowship by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India for the years 2005-2007 for her project. She is also a Member of The International Dance Council of UNESCO.

Kanchan was a TGT Dance teacher in DPS Rohini in 2000-2001 & is currently teaching at the Gandharva Mahavidyalay since 2002. She has also choreographed ballets in DPS Rohini & Junior Modern Schools’ Validitory Function (2007). She has been honored by the Chairman of NDMC, Delhi in 1999 and has been invited as a judge for dance competitions in various reputed schools in Delhi.

Kanchan has worked in fusion projects: ‘Rhythm & Dance’ with other Flamenco, Tap, Irish & Argentinean dancers in Stockholm, Sweden - 2004 : in ‘Un, Two, Teen’ with a French dancer at Alliance Francaise, New Delhi 2006, & ‘Tara’, with international dancers at The Attic, New Delhi 2007. She has choreographed and performed in a documentary film on ‘Navras’.
